Cookie Policy

This Cookie Policy explains the cookies and similar browser storage used by Aeternum Corp. (“Aeternum”, “we”, “us”) on our website at aeternumproject.com, our web app at app.aeternumproject.com, and our iOS and Android apps. The providers named here are described in section 10 of our Privacy Policy.

01 WHAT COOKIES AND BROWSER STORAGE ARE

Cookies are small text files that a website asks your browser to keep and send back on later visits. A website can also keep information in your browser’s own storage, such as “local storage”, which works in a similar way but is not sent back automatically. This policy covers both.

Some of these are necessary: the service cannot work without them, so they are not optional. The others are optional, and we use them only if you allow them.

02 YOUR CHOICES

In the web app. The first time you open app.aeternumproject.com, a banner offers Reject all, Accept all and Choose. Nothing optional is set until you answer, and nothing optional is set at all if you reject. You can change your answer at any time:

  • when signed in, under Settings › About & Support › Cookie settings; or
  • when signed out, with the Cookie settings link on the welcome screen.

Turning Analytics off stops Google Analytics straight away and deletes its cookies. Turning Functional off deletes the items listed under it. Your answer is kept in that browser rather than in your account, so another browser or device will ask you again. If we change the categories in this policy, the web app asks you again.

In your browser’s settings. You can also block or delete cookies and site data. If you block the necessary items, the web app cannot keep you signed in.

On our website there is no banner, because nothing optional runs until you choose it. The website sets no cookies, and the only thing kept in your browser when a page loads is Cloudflare Turnstile’s security entry, which is strictly necessary to protect our forms from spam. The one optional service, a YouTube video on one page, loads only when you press play (section 04). In the mobile apps there is nothing optional to choose (section 05).

What cookies do not control. Our servers report some usage to Google Analytics directly, whichever app you use, and your cookie choice does not control that. It is described in §10.7 of our Privacy Policy.

03 THE WEB APP

This section covers our web app at app.aeternumproject.com.

Cookies

Necessary. Set by Stripe, our payment provider, only once you open a payment form: adding a payment method under Settings › Billing, or a subscription checkout. They help Stripe prevent payment fraud.

  • __stripe_mid: identifies your browser to Stripe for fraud prevention. Kept for 1 year.
  • __stripe_sid: identifies your visit to Stripe for fraud prevention. Kept for 30 minutes.
  • m, set by Stripe’s own address (m.stripe.com): identifies your device to Stripe, together with signals about it, for fraud prevention. Kept for up to 2 years.

Analytics (optional, off until you allow it). Set by Google Analytics 4 and kept on app.aeternumproject.com only. What Google receives is described in §10.7 of our Privacy Policy.

  • _ga: tells one browser from another using a random ID. Kept for up to 2 years from your last visit.
  • _ga_6RV8LMRFJZ: keeps track of your current visit, such as its number and start time. Kept for up to 2 years from your last visit.

Some browsers, including Chrome, keep no cookie for longer than 400 days, whatever the cookie asks for. The web app sets no other cookies.

Browser storage

Necessary. Kept in your browser, on your device only.

  • Signing in: userToken, userData and statusInfo keep you signed in and hold your account details and status. Removed when you sign out.
  • Your cookie choice: aeternum-cookie-consent holds your answer, when you gave it, and the version of this policy it was given under. Kept until you change it or clear your browser data.
  • Opening quickly: apollo-cache-persist holds a copy of up to 2 MB of what you have viewed, without the links to your photos and videos, and feed_last_fetch… notes when your feed was last refreshed. Both are removed when you sign out.
  • Drafts and edits in progress: memory-drafts, @afe_new_memory_draft_v2:…, editing_draft_…, editing_field_… and editing_nickname_… hold what you have typed but not yet saved. Removed when you save, post or discard it.
  • Invitations: pendingInvitationToken holds an invitation you opened while you sign in. Removed once you have signed in.
  • Your Aela conversation: memoria_history_… and memoria_pending_report_… hold your recent conversation with Aela and any report you were writing in it, for your account only. Removed when you start a new conversation or sign out.
  • Getting started and settings: aela_welcome_post_…, welcome-modal, getting-started-list and general-selection remember your progress through the welcome steps and the archive file you are opening; debugMode is a troubleshooting switch. Kept until you clear your browser data.

Functional (optional, off until you allow it). These make the app easier to use but are not needed. Kept until you turn Functional off or clear your browser data.

  • @afe_recent_places_v1: the last 6 places you chose for a memory, so you can pick them again.
  • @afe_recent_tagged_users_v1: the last 20 people you tagged, with their name, email address, profile ID, relationship to you and picture link, so you can tag them again.

04 OUR WEBSITE

Our website at aeternumproject.com sets no cookies and keeps nothing optional in your browser. It runs no analytics. The only record of visits is the access logs our hosting provider keeps for us, which put nothing in your browser; §10.12 of our Privacy Policy lists what they contain. Nothing optional runs until you choose it, so the website shows no cookie banner. Two services built into its pages are described below, and in §10.12 of our Privacy Policy.

  • Cloudflare Turnstile, the spam check on our forms, which loads on every page: keeps one security entry, cf.turnstile.u, in your browser’s storage inside Cloudflare’s own frame (challenges.cloudflare.com), and sets no cookies. This is the only thing stored in your browser when a page loads. Cloudflare decides how long it is kept. It is strictly necessary to protect our forms from automated spam.
  • YouTube, on our tester application page only, and only if you press play: until then the page shows a still image from our own site, and nothing is requested from YouTube or Google. When you press play, the video loads from youtube-nocookie.com. YouTube then receives your IP address and viewing information, and may store data in your browser under Google’s terms. If your browser does not run JavaScript, the page shows a link instead, which opens the video on youtube.com in a new tab under YouTube’s own terms. It is optional: unless you press play or follow that link, YouTube receives nothing and stores nothing.

Earlier versions of our web app set its _ga cookie for the whole of aeternumproject.com, so your browser also sent it to this website. The web app now keeps that cookie on app.aeternumproject.com only, and deletes the older copies the next time you open it.

05 THE IOS AND ANDROID APPS

The mobile apps use no cookies to track you and contain no analytics or advertising software, so they do not show a cookie banner. They keep the same kinds of necessary information as the web app, such as your sign-in, drafts and a copy of what you have viewed, in the app’s own storage on your device. They also keep your recent places and recently tagged people, listed under Functional above; the apps do not currently offer a switch for these.

Our servers’ load balancer may give the apps a routing cookie, AWSALB or AWSALBCORS, which sends your requests to the same server for up to 1 day. It is necessary for the service to work reliably.

The identifiers the apps use for updates and push notifications are described in §10.4 and §10.5 of our Privacy Policy.

06 CHANGES TO THIS POLICY

We update this page whenever the cookies or storage we use change. If we add or change an optional category, the web app asks for your choice again.
